| Abstract: | A string theoretic construction will be presented relating BPS states, Donaldson-Thomas invariants and the cohomology of the Hitchin system. In particular, the work of Hausel and Rodrgiguez-Villegas will be given a natural physical explanation based on geometric engineering.
