Description: A project examining hospital refurbishment funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of the 'Adaptation and Resilience to a Changing Climate' programme, 2009-12. The Principal Investigator is Professor Alan Short in the Department of Architecture at Cambridge. Co-Investigators: Professor Kevin Lomas (Civil and Building Engineering, University of Loughborough); Professor John Clarkson (Engineering Design Centre, University of Cambridge); Dr Claudia Eckert (Design Group, Open University); Dr Cath Noakes (Pathogen Control Engineering Research Group, University of Leeds). The team is working with four NHS Trusts (Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust; West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust). We are interested in the possible effects of a changing climate on hospital energy use. The NHS is tasked with demanding energy reduction targets, but will it be possible to achieve them in a warming climate where custom-and-practice engineering solutions would suggest the increased use of mechanical cooling and air conditioning? The team is collecting and analysing data on current performance from representative buildings on the partner Trust sites, and is using this to develop a catalogue of possible refurbishment strategies.
