Abstract: Today's world is faced with a multiplicity of challenges including energy, food, water and economic well-being. Each of these will ultimately culminate in an impact on the agenda for the development of health services. Medicine is currently, in practice, unaffordable for much of the world's population, but how best to deal with core issues concerning child health, maternal health, and dependency and care for those with chronic diseases, are issues which must be addressed in any civilised society.
