Description: Abstract: Jones is often seen as a disciple of Palladio. However, his work was also shaped by national forces and a negative reaction to Italian architecture. This lecture will examine the links between the column and the crown prior to Jones's work. It will discuss how notes made following his visit to Rome in 1614 can be viewed in the context of Protestant decorative sensitivities. Jones's subsequent buildings will be examined in the light of these notes. Jones will be shown to have sought to establish a temperate classism, distinct from the excesses of Rome and consistent with Protestant aesthetics.
