Abstract: This Note describes the events surrounding the theoretical discovery and experimental demonstration of the Josephson Effect in 1962, with some comments on the rather convoluted publication history which led to full accounts appearing only in 1964. I also remark on the centrality of these events to our present understanding of the role of symmetry in condensed matter generally.
