Abstract: Here at the University of Cambridge, all our postgraduate degree programmes in education are research based. This means that students, regardless of their substantive topic of interest, will need to acquire the skills necessary to conduct education research. So what is education research and does it have distinct features as compared to other social science research? One key feature of education research is that it is a particularly broad church, encompassing a wide range of different disciplinary and methodological approaches. This session introduces the nature of the educational research process and its particular characteristics, aims and traditions. We discuss some of the issues, questions and controversies arising. The purpose of this session is to equip students with an overview of the education research terrain and to help them think about their own project within a broader context.
