Abstract: Globally the quantity and quality of soil, water and biodiversity that underpins the economy, business and livelihoods is declining at an alarming rate. Considerable risks can be found in value chains for companies that rely on natural resources. The majority of these risks lie upstream where raw materials are sourced. These risks exist because the natural capital, upon which business depends, is being depleted and degraded.

This degradation has direct impacts upon the costs of sourcing raw materials and price volatility. As such, this can threaten to undermine the ability of a company to generate revenue and sustain growth.

To secure company value chains, businesses leaders need to invest in measures that enhance natural capital. Not only does this enable growth and commercial revenue but it provides a wide range of social benefits beyond the business.
