Abstract: Local population estimates for the late seventeenth century have been produced from two sources, both of which are problematic. First, the 'Compton Census' of 1673, an ecclesiastical census. Estimates here are complicated by the fact that it is usually unclear whether the numbers given in the original source material refer to males only, male communicants (16 and over) or were counts of souls (i.e. all people). The second source is the hearth taxt, literally a tax on hearths (fire-places). Here estimates are complicated by the varying levels of exemptions for the poor. WIth both sources there are complications arising from urban/rural differences in household size. Exisitng local populationestimates and widely used estimates of the urbanisation rate have substantial margins of error. The paper presents a case study of the county of Bedfordshire and demonstrates that in certain circumsances it is possible to make reliable estimates of populations for individual parishes.
