Abstract: | 1. This presentation highlights the results of the WCTRS COVID-19 Taskforce expert survey, interprets them and considers their implications for new policy recommendations. The global spread of COVID-19 and the emergency mitigation measures have resulted a variety of collateral impacts in different countries. The impacts, either benign or malign, reflect the level of preparedness in infrastructure in the management of both private and public transport as well as people's habits and attitudes. It would seem that the post-pandemic new normal would require breaking with much of the ‘common sense’ that we inherit from the 20th Century.
2. In this lecture I argue that we need a next generation of LUTI models that model trends such as peak car; decline in population, shops, services, etc., impact of information and communications technology (ICT) on activity patterns and travel, cycling policies, and maybe also pandemics like COVID19. The current generation of LUTI models cannot adequately answer the policy questions raised by these trends. |
