Abstract: 'Can Tragedy exist in Painting?' Edited highlights of a talk by artist Tom de Freston, concerning his paintings on the theme of 'Paradise Lost' hanging in the Entrance Hall of Cambridge University Library and the notion of Tragedy in painting, The Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the University of Cambridge, based at Christ’s College, de Freston has worked on visual responses to Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost, first published in 1667. Tom said: “The paintings inspired by Paradise Lost look to develop and continue notions which have existed in my work for the past few years. The fall has been a recurring motif in my paintings for the past four years, and is central to much of the narrative and metaphorical content of Paradise Lost”. The clip is from a talk given in the Library on 23 February 2011.
