Abstract: 'Capriccio' by Alex Mills received its world premiere at Madingley Hall on 11 March 2012, where it was performed by a piano trio alongside works by Beethoven and Ligeti. The piece is a jostle between moments of tentative contemplation and heightened agitation. The opening strings, ominous and strangely serene, are soon overpowered by the imposing piano, and a spirited power struggle ensues for the rest of the piece. A brief chorale-like interruption attempts to settle the mood once and for all, but a sense of agitation persists and the music hurtles towards a fitting conclusion.
