Abstract: The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute hosts and runs a number of key programmes that impact on research in African countries. These cover general genomics (The African Genome Initiative), specific disease areas (MalariaGen, Non-typhoidal Salmonella) and we have a multitude of other links. We are well connected to the different Wellcome Trust overseas units (e.g. Kenya, Malawi) the UK Medical Research Council (MRC)’s Units (in The Gambia, Uganda) and to other centres. We work on both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
We have two African’s on our faculty who are Sanger International Fellows (Sam Kariuki in Kenya and Abdoulaye Djimde in Mali) based on the continent. We also have links with other Fellows (Iruka Okeke, Nigeria and Chinyere Okoro, Sanger) as well as the Wellcome Trust-Cambridge Centre for Global Health Research. We are active in translational activities (e.g. in Vaccine Development with Biovac, South Africa). We regularly run training courses in Africa through the Wellcome Trust Advanced Courses. These initiatives will be discussed in this presentation.
