Abstract: Teaching and learning in school necessarily involves the use of spoken dialogue; and so to understand how education takes place we have to
understand how talk is used by teachers and students. This session provides both a theoretical and practical introduction to the methods
and techniques associated with the analysis of classroom talk. We examine various methodological approaches, and relate them to types of
research questions and methods for gathering and analysing data. We also engage in activities aimed at developing practical skills in collecting and analysing classroom discourse.
