Abstract:	Some fifty years ago the street, and what people were wearing in cities like London, Amsterdam and New York, became the main influence on High Fashion. Since then fashion developed into one of the most democratic ways of expressing ourselves. Nowadays screens have taken over this influential role. What is the impact of this change in fashion experience? Pauline Terreehorst was a Wolfson Press Fellow in 2000. Educated in film theory, literature and semiotics at the University of Amsterdam, she taught at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. She is currently the Director of Natlab, a theatre and arthouse in Eindhoven which is based at the former Physics Laboratory of Philips. From 1985 to 2002 she was Fashion Editor of the Dutch daily newspaper de Volkskrant and has also been Director of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (part of the University of Amsterdam) and of the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
