Description: The Rothschild bronzes are impressive and fascinating objects. Their attribution to Michelangelo will continue to generate debate and disagreement. Somewhat less controversial is their subject matter, although the meaning of two nude men riding on large felines is certainly unusual, if not unique. In our paper, we will consider the subject matter and meaning of the bronzes, which, in turn, permits us to better determine why and when they were cast, as well as lending some evidence to the thornier questions: for whom were they made and who is their author?
