Description: Michelangelo’s work as a sculptor, painter on panel and in fresco, as an architect and as an expert on fortifications have all received massive attention from scholars but his much lesser activity designing smaller items is largely overlooked. Here I discuss not only his virtuoso invention and distinctive usage of ornament but also his designs for floors, ceilings, furniture, candlesticks, reliquaries, vases, a ciborium, a ‘stocco’ (a form of dagger) and a salt-cellar.
