Abstract: Data wrangling is the process of re-organising data into a different form so that it becomes better structured, fits a report template, or matches the schema requirements for some statistical analysis tool. This process is becoming increasingly common for data scientists and in other professions where existing data must be used in ways that were not envisioned when it was first collected.

We present a prototype of a system, which brings the power of programming by example to data wrangling in spreadsheets. The system guides the user through constructing a simple example describing how they would like their spreadsheet to look. A transformation program – a combination of reshaping operations and of filling in missing values using interpolation – is then synthesised and executed to produce the final reshaped spreadsheet.
